Manuscript Collection

Robert Sterl sent countless letters to his wife Helene while travelling. Since the artist did not keep a daily journal, they remain the most important source of biographical information for Sterl researchers. In addition, Sterl corresponded with numerous artists, art historians and other public figures; many of these letters have also been preserved in our archive. Among others, letters can be found from Albiker, Bantzer and Corinth as well as Lehrs, Posse and Schuch. The archive is accessible to those carrying out academic research. Some of Sterl’s manuscripts are also held by the Stiftung Archiv der Akademie der Künste in Berlin.

It is rare that an artist’s entire library from the early 20th century has been preserved. In addition to numerous art journals and major exhibition catalogues, the collection contains works on contemporary art and art history. Sterl’s compelling interest in Russia is evident in works cataloguing the works of Maxim Gorky and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The library also contains exclusive publications and editions, such as the “Buch Judith”, with lithographs by Corinth, “Epithalamia” by Elsa Asenijeff with drawings by Klinger and, of course, “Musik an der Wolga,” by Oskar Bie with lithographs by Robert Sterl.

Artistic Legacy and Gifts

Among our most important responsibilities is the preservation and maintenance of Robert Sterl’s oeuvre as well as its academic examination. Today, our archive contains more than 235 paintings, of which approximately 100 are on permanent exhibition, along with more than 2,600 drawings, 200 sketch books and a comprehensive collection of printed graphics. The graphic works are also the focus of academic and educational research. The collection also includes gifts to the artist, for example from Sterl’s students such as Robert Liebknecht, as well as a portfolio from the “Dresdner Künstlervereinigung” given on the occasion of Sterl’s 60th birthday in 1927.
